Our Safety Standards
At WeCaptain, safety is our top priority. We've established comprehensive standards and verification processes to ensure every yacht delivery is conducted safely and professionally.
Captain Verification
All captains on our platform must:
- Hold valid USCG credentials appropriate for the vessel size and route
- Provide documentation of their sailing experience and delivery history
- Maintain current safety certifications (First Aid, CPR, STCW as applicable)
- Pass identity verification through our authentication system
- Subscribed captains undergo enhanced background checks
Vessel Safety Requirements
We recommend yacht owners ensure their vessels meet these standards before delivery:
- Current safety equipment inspection (fire extinguishers, flares, life jackets)
- Working navigation and communication systems
- Adequate fuel capacity for the planned route plus reserves
- Emergency position indicating beacon (EPIRB) for offshore passages
- Float plan filed with a responsible party onshore
For Yacht Owners
Before Hiring a Captain
- Verify credentials: Ask to see the captain's license and certifications
- Check references: Request and contact previous clients
- Review experience: Ensure experience matches your vessel type and route
- Discuss the route: Agree on waypoints, weather windows, and contingencies
- Get insurance: Verify your vessel insurance covers hired captains
During the Delivery
- Establish regular check-in schedules (daily position reports)
- Provide emergency contact information
- Share vessel documentation and insurance information
- Agree on communication methods and backup plans
For Captains
Before Accepting a Job
- Sea trial: Inspect the vessel thoroughly before departure
- Safety equipment: Verify all required equipment is aboard and functional

- Weather: Plan your departure around favorable weather windows
- Insurance: Confirm you're covered under the vessel's policy or your own
Best Practices
